Jul. 3rd, 2002 11:18 amHouse Speaker Jimmy Naifeh has declared the Tennessee state income tax dead. It was a plan he had championed as a way to balance the state's $800 million budget.
Speaking in the House chamber, Naifeh told his colleagues he's done what he could to get an income tax adopted and said he's still convinced it's the best way to move the state forward. But the speaker also said the bill doesn't have the votes needed to pass and added, "We cannot pass it."
The state is in its third day of a partial government shutdown as lawmakers debate different plans to balance the budget for fiscal year 2002-2003, which started on July 1.
WHOOO!
