this is going to sound really dumb, but I just don't know what a blog is, and I keep hearing mentions of it. Could you explain it to me in childlike terms? :) Thanks.

The word blog is derived from weblog by thinking of the latter word not as the conjunction of web and log, but rather we and blog.

We blog. And so, a rather formal, impersonal name for a very personal type of Web site, begins to suggest a community.

not we blog. web log. It's a log of thoughts on the web. Just being disagreeable.

blog is short for weblog, LiveJournal is a place that hosts blogs for people. I also use a package called MovableType to create blogs on my own site.
