I'm absolutely stupified at this Sportsline.com writer's condecending article about DeAngelo and the Tigers.

Memphis is currently playing with converted receiver
Maurice Avery taking snaps. Calling Avery a quarterback might be a
stretch. He is a former guard in John Calipari's basketball program and
gave up the sport to concentrate on his receiving skills.

um...do just a tiny bit of research and find out that:

  1. Avery played QB in High School, and was very good, and was backup his freshman year for the Tigers

  2. Avery played for like half a season for the basketball team, mainly to give the starters rest, in an injury depleted year.

  3. Avery was a receiver before the BBall thing.

and then there's this gem:

Memphis usually has to outscore opponents to win.

Stupified I tell you...

Well, that last one makes sense. We have no real defense to speak of... opponents can pass greater than 20 yards at will. Our only hope is to score as quickly as we can and hope they don't score more than us. :(

Of course you need more points to win, but how you say things is important too. The way the phrase "Memphis usually has to outscore opponents to win." is written, it implies that either team can score at will... (i.e. "UT couldn't stop DeAngelo from rushing for 30 yards per carry, so their only hope was to simply outscore the Tigers.")

Reminds me of Yogi Berra:

"How did you manage to win this game?"

"We scored more points."

The flip-side of it is that it can be taken as very complimentary of DeAngelo's talent. I've never hidden the fact that I don't care for the Tigers the least little bit, but if you take into account everything the team has been through this year, its hard not to be impressed. Especially with the kind of year DeAngelo is having.
