Juli Dennis stood in the middle of the pasture, her hands clasped and her eyes closed. She wore blue sweats and black boots and a power bead bracelet on her wrist. Her lips moved but no words came out as her body swayed gently. At times she raised a palm toward the four horses. She relayed messages to them telepathically, feeling their energy through meditation.
It's her gift, she says.
On this night the mother horse was hesitant about talking. "She just told me she might talk to me," Dennis said. "I got a maybe."
The horses had some family issues, and were working on healing those, she said. The dog, Sammy, was angry and scared of going hungry again, stemming from a life on the streets before she was adopted, Dennis said.
She huddled with three curious horses that let her scratch their necks and pet them between the eyes. "They've let her in the pack," horse owner Jane Shelton said while standing in her Olive Branch pasture. "That's the most relaxed they can be."
Shelton has never had anyone communicate with her animals but she heard about Dennis from a friend.
Dennis, a 59-year-old animal healer, first felt her gift six years ago when a ladybug that had found its way into a high-rise building where she worked thanked her for setting it free.
Soon after, she connected with a robin she helped heal after a kid shot it in the eye with a BB gun. They had many talks in the meditation garden of her Memphis home.
Some call her a pet psychic or horse whisperer, but Dennis describes herself as a minister of peace, her mission to help animals and humans understand one another better.
She loves all animals, she said, but some -- like mosquitos -- aren't at the top of her list.
"I talked to one (mosquito) in the shower and said, "If you'll stay off my body, you're OK."
Dennis gave up a career in social work to practice interspecies communication full-time, she said. Her credentials include certificates for courses in healing touch for animals and animal communication.
To those who doubt her gift, Dennis said she also was a nonbeliever until she experienced it herself.
She charges $75 for house calls, and sees patients in pet shops, horse shows and in her home, which costs about $60.
She doesn't have to be in the same room, city, or even country to reach an animal, she said. She can feel their energy from anywhere. But only with their permission.
"It's all about improving their relationships," she said. "My practice is to transform the scared into the sacred."
