This Transformers fan site I run was getting close to 100,000 visitors, so I offered a little contest for the 100,000th visitor. I've now got 6 people (with copies of the counter graphic) saying they won. Time to go through the server logs.
I don't think I'll be doing that again.

At Zophar's Domain, Swampgas always had the number in question (in this case, 100,000) appear in a different color. This easily let him separate the fakers from the authentic winner.

The counter I use isn't hosted by me so I can't control that. I do have the first three digits of the IP though, and I've found the whole IP in the logs to match it. Finding who that belongs to is the problem.

Ask the "winners" to tell you the IP they're coming from. If they're on dialup, at least it will be similar.
