You should use some X-10 technology. Then, you could have turned it on with your computer... I have a dimmer switch at home that I can turn on remotely (all I have to do is plug in the control unit to a power outlet and reinstall the software. :P )
For a long time, I had my window A/C unit set to come on 30 minutes before I got home (it was summer at the time.) I also had Christmas lights up in the gameroom that I could turn on via PC or with the wall switch.
